![]() ![]() Eijkman was stationed in the Dutch colony of Java in the 1880s studying beriberi, a paralyzing and ultimately fatal disease endemic to much of South and Southwest Asia. The research of Dutch physician Christiaan Eijkman involved a disease as horrific as scurvy but less well known in the Western world. ![]() He published his findings in 1754 in A Treatise of the Scurvy, but it would take another 150 years before the idea of “vitamin C” was established. Lind was not the first to treat scurvy with diet, but he was the first to carry out a systematic experiment on his suffering crew, thus proving the dietary value of citrus fruits. Perhaps best known is the story of 18th-century English naval surgeon James Lind, who treated his bloody-gummed, emaciated sailors with oranges and lemons to cure them of scurvy-a disease that often killed half a ship’s crew on long sea voyages. The early history of nutrition-in particular the discovery of those micronutrients we call vitamins-includes stories of near mythic proportion, pitting “men of science” (and they usually were men) against ignorance and dread disease. For example, Eli seems to be encouraging Oskar's killer tendencies by asking him if he would kill for revenge. ![]() The question of whether Eli was actually grooming Oskar to be the "new Håkan" is really a paradox for a lot of the viewers of this film in that her actions can either be perceived as being manipulative or taken as comments between two friends wanting to help each other. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I liked the idea of time-travel and a secret organisation and I do think that Kerstin Gier really made the plot come alive but as this was the first book, it mostly consisted of world building. I was actually thinking of not continuing the series until I heard that the second book was even better. While I enjoyed the book, it wasn’t the best I’ve ever read. I read Ruby Red years ago as part of a buddy read and it was the first time I had ever heard of the series. Nobody knows that Gwyneth has the time traveling gene, except for her and her friend Lesley. The series follows the story of Gwyneth Shepherd, a time-traveling girl living in contemporary London. Walfort becomes paralyzed and Ainsley holds the guilt of all of that close to his heart because he was the one that was driving. At the end of the night, Ainsley and Walfort get into what would be a modern day drunk driving accident and Walfort is forever changed. Three years ago, Ainsley got the good news that his best friend’s wife was pregnant with his heir and they went off to celebrate the happy news. In this book, we find out why he is the way that he is. He was the brother that was forever getting his brothers out of trouble and he’s pretty hot dang close to being perfect. We don’t get to know Ainsley much in both Westcliff and Stephen’s books, in those books he was the younger brother that acted like he was the oldest brother. Heath sure knows how to pull at my heart strings with the whole unrequited love thing and I felt Ainsley’s guilt and his longing for Jayne as if it were happening to me. She does that once again with Ainsley’s story. She made me care about them as people and she did a bang up job of making me come to love them as well. One of the main reasons I enjoyed the first two books in this series so much was Heath did a wonderful job of making me apart of Westcliff and Stephen’s worlds.
